Owens-Illinois (O-I) Latin America President Credits Region's Success to Team Members and Pathways to Leadership

(The following email is from Rich Crawford, President O-I Latin America Glass)

Hi Steve,

I hope all is going well with you. For the O-I Latin America team, we are living my dream of greatness. They are an energized group and we are making great progress. I was in Ecuador and Peru last week. One of the most rewarding events was when 7 Pathways to Leadership power teams got up and presented savings programs they are working on to improve the business.

I calculated close to $500K dollars of savings, some realized and some projected to the end of the year. Wow was it cool to be a part of that! There were hourly workers, sales managers - every level - with a total of about 52 in the room. We had a blast.

I wanted to ask a favor. Attached is a word document that I want to submit for the Pathways to Leadership Website.

Dear Pathways to Leadership team,

Our region is cascading a Wellness Culture throughout the region and the results are outstanding. The Leadership Team had the Pathways to Leadership training in January of 2006. We have now executed this training for members of all 5 countries that are represented in Latin America, and our schedule is to complete Pathways to Leadership training for over 260 employees by the end of the year.

One of the greatest strengths of our region is that everyone is proud of their work and willing to share the successes to make the region better as a whole. The shared learning and leadership experience we all had during the Pathways to Leadership training has built on this strength and has resulted in record setting performance in most of our manufacturing and financial metrics. The culture of wellness has become so powerful that the rest of the corporation is benchmarking our results and we are hopeful to spread our culture for the betterment of all.

I see the entire list of Pathways to Leadership tools being used everywhere - customer meetings, dealing with the union, working on difficult team assignments, solving business issues and driving continuous improvement.

It is so rewarding to be a part of this team. It doesn't matter what country you visit, or what meeting you attend, the Wellness Culture is making us more productive and much more positive. I also see so many examples where we are reporting better quality of life at home with our family and friends. Having this balance is so important for our people, it is very nice to see them growing and leading in this way. One last thing to mention, we're having a lot of fun along the way! Having this environment doesn't make it feel like work, it's just a great place to be.

The value is that we have highly motivated and dedicated employees. It is difficult to put the financial benefit in a finite number, but we are beating our budgeted earnings and we have the top performing region in manufacturing efficiency metrics. The Pathways to Leadership tools have opened our minds and we are more creative, more sure of ourselves and more courageous to take on the difficulties that we face in the business world.
